Palin Gimmick and Attacks Fail McCain: New Poll | NYT-CBS Poll

If McCain apologist Bill Kristol’s admonition to “fire his campaign,” wasn’t the 3 a.m. call for the McCain campaign, maybe the latest numbers from the New York Times/CBS Poll will wake ‘em up.

Maybe things are still too tight to say John McCain is ‘losing,’ but all indicators seem to say that he is failing – failing to connect to voters in any meaningful way, failing to offer them a vision of a future that is not more U.S. decline, and failing to show them what his view of a re-invigorated American Dream would look like.

Rather than speak to our ‘better angels’ McCain and company have been trying to stir Americans’ passions by cajoling the devil on our collective shoulder.  Bill Ayers, Sarah Palin, surrogates inciting crowds with toy monkeys and innuendo regarding Barack Obama’s race, religion, and patriotism — it’s all been on display from the McCain campaign over the past two weeks.  It’s all cynical and demeaning to our collective intellect – from the MILFy, gun-toting, Pentecostal running mate (there’s something in that for everyone!) to the attempt to link an eight year-old Obama to the domestic mayhem of the 1960s Weather Underground.

From the New York Times story on the latest poll:

Voters who said that their opinions of Mr. Obama had changed recently were twice as likely to say that they had gotten better as to say they had gotten worse. And voters who said that their views of Mr. McCain had changed were three times more likely to say that they had gotten worse than to say they had improved. The top reasons cited by those who said that thought less of Mr. McCain were his recent attacks and his choice of Gov. of Alaska as his running mate. (The vast majority said that their opinions of Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee, and Mr. McCain, the Republican nominee, had remained unchanged in recent weeks.)

Meanwhile, back at the Obama Ranch, they’re herding up more details.  Just yesterday there were more specifics outlined in what Obama would do to jump start the economy.  And, have you noticed the difference between the candidates’ rallies?  John McCain’s “town hall meetings” are invitation-only — keep out the naysayers, while Obama’s events are open to the public.  It’s easy to have a town hall meeting when you know every question is a softball from a supporter.

Who in their right mind could have any more questions regarding who is fit to best serve this nation?

Help stop the hate – here are three things you can do to make a difference right now:

    1. Sign the petition to end incitement of hatred and violence by McCain/Palin.

    2. Write your Congressperson about it.

    3. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.

    And spread the word!

The McCain campaign’s recent angry tone and sharply personal attacks on Senator Barack Obama appear to have backfired and tarnished Senator John McCain more than their intended target, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll has found.
    <…?
But in recent days, Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin have scaled back their attacks on Mr. Obama, although Mr. McCain suggested he might aggressively take on Mr. Obama in Wednesday’s debate.

Given this poll is from NYT and CBS, and it such an outlier from any others put out, I don’t think I’m overly cynical in believing this is an attempt to keep McCain from bringing up Ayers et all tomorrow night.
