My first reaction reading this was, “Well, no shit Sherlock.” But then I thought about all the people I’ve tried to dissuade from opening that email or forwarding on some junk just because their aunt sent it to them and said send this to five friends. The internet is life and there’s a lot of crap out there. People will learn and articles like this in the Dispatch will help them.
Have you seen these ads? They run at night for max spook effect. The fact is, you should be somewhat spooked. The next flu pandemic will be fought with tools the world didn’t have in 1918 or 1957, but there are other things about the world today that will work against us. In 1918, it took weeks for the flu to spread across the U.S. once it arrived. The next pandemic is likely to spread in days because of how easily and far we travel as a society. I don’t want to go all Mormon on you, but you might consider keeping some supplies around if it every looked like spending a week or two around the house would be a good idea – or necessary. If you want a good primer on influenza in general and the famous 1918 outbreak in particular, check out: The Great Influenza, by John M. Barry. It’s an accessible, engaging read and you might be surprised about how life changed during a pandemic.
